Representation Homework and holiday work

Dear All,

For your work this week and over half term, please could you go to www.allisonmedia.net and research Representation. You need to make notes on this and also specifically research stereotype, countertype and archetype.

Please also keep a media diary of what you watch over the next ten days. You need to say what the source was (eg TV, internet etc) and think about who you think is being represented.

Thanks a lot; I will be checking this after school on Monday 3rd November.

Homework 12.10.09

Hello Folks,

After today's lesson I would like you to post a detailed technical analysis of the second half of the film "In the Pursuit of Happyness"on your blogs. As a base line, you need to talk about the four elements Mise en Scene, Sound and Dialogue, Shot Types and Editing. In addition (for brownie points) you may also mention any signs you identified and what these connote or denote. Please use the appropriate media terminology.

You can choose to focus in detail on a particular section of the film or you can give me somne examples from throughout the second half, contrasting the use of each to make different effects. This needs to be posted by Thursday's lesson. I will be checking in class.

Thanks a lot
Mrs B

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION, HOMEWORK!

  • Take any short scene (2/3 minutes) from a text – film, TV fiction or TV ad. Take notes and be able to present your findings on:
    }Camerawork
    }How it has been edited
}How lighting, costume, set design etc contribute to the narrative
    Now examine the sound track:
What are the component parts of the sound? Music? Voices? Sound effects, including distortion? How have they been arranged and chosen? Are some louder than others? Why has each been included? Do they seem accidental?
How have they been shaped around the action or talk in that scene? How close do the voices seem? How have they been chosen or constructed? How does all this contribute to the narrative?

Homework for today- GENRE

To back up your work on genre, please choose one recent film you have enjoyed watching. Write a brief summary of this film. Research the INSTITUTIONS and IDEOLOGIES linked to it (like the funding stream etc), Then I would like you to think about WHICH genre it represents, whether or not it is a HYBRID text. You also need to find a trailer for it and think about how it is marketed.

Please have this on your blog by Monday October 12th.
